AIR TRAFFIC SAFETY COMPROMISED IN GERMANY
IFATSEA deplores the decision of the German Parliament to remove Air Traffic Safety Electronics Personnel (ATSEPs) from the current legislative requirement for a license.
“This can only undermine our air traffic safety” said Iain Findlay, Executive Secretary of IFATSEA. “So soon after the Ueberlingen disaster, it appears that no lessons have been learnt by Germany, when following that accident the Swiss government decided that an ATSEP license is required to enhance air traffic safety. At a time of great technological change, when we are looking to the implementation of Single European Sky, the lowering of standards can only harm the current high safety levels” said Findlay. “We are concerned for the future of our German colleagues as this decision opens the way to contracting out the engineering function which has proved so disastrous in the rail industry in the UK”.
